About the Yacht
Gaiamar, a 47′ Beneteau sloop, is the perfect choice for couples looking for a true sailing charter. Gaiamar is fast and sleek yet offers smart and comfortable appointments both above and below decks. The large cushioned cockpit provides ample space for everyone to enjoy the sailing experience or relax with a sundowner while on the mooring. The open transom steps make for easy access to the water for snorkeling. Below, the salon’s large table is perfect for meals and for planning the next day’s adventures. The forward cabin provides guests privacy and comfort with a large settee and ensuite head. Learning to sail can be part of the vacation either as an ASA structured course for certification or as a casual hands-on participation approach.
Gail and Barry’s cruising grounds include the “Island of Enchantment” Puerto Rico and the Spanish Virgin islands of Culebra and Vieques, to “America’s Caribbean” the USVI, to the sailor’s paradise of the BVI and beyond to the entire Leeward and Windward islands. They love to introduce newcomers to the Caribbean and help them to discover which island is THEIR favorite island.
Captains Gail Bowdish and Barry Lyon have been sailing together since 2009, logging over 13,000 nautical miles since then including a transatlantic crossing. Before joining forces, they had logged in excess of 20,000 nautical miles each, sailing and living the cruising life for many years. Their sailing resumes include the US east coast, US west coast, Mexico, Gulf of Mexico, the Abacos, Bermuda, Azores, Portugal, Greece, Panama, the Windward and Leeward islands, and the Great Lakes. They met floating, of course, and within minutes they recognized their kindred spirits. (Ask us to tell you the story.) Seldom have they been apart since that first meeting. Gail has established herself as an accomplished singlehanded sailor, earning the Five Lakes Award from the Great Lakes Singlehanded Society, one of just seven people and the only woman to have done so, and also single-handing Gaiamar throughout the Caribbean. She is a certified ASA instructor who can teach the basics of sailing or advanced coastal cruising skills, navigation, and can even certify those looking to charter on their own. Gail and Barry love teaching couples to sail together as a team, and enjoy hearing about former students who then move aboard and cast off the dock lines as they have done. If instruction and certification are not on the to-do list, then Gail and Barry can fill or empty the days as desired. If the ideal getaway in mind includes rendezvous diving, snorkeling, hiking, exploring historical sites or relaxing on the beach with a great book, Gaiamar can take you there. As the cruising chef, Barry’s focus is on meeting or exceeding the guests’ goals for comfort, relaxation, exploration, excitement, night life, and island cuisine. He has developed a menu that includes sourcing fresh, local ingredients to create favorite dishes from the islands he and Gail have visited throughout the eastern Caribbean.

What We Like
With a refit in 2013 and 2014, Gaiamar looks like a brand new yacht. She is not only a very comfortable and clean cruiser Gaiamar is every bit the luxury charter vessel. Captains Gail and Barry have sailed the Virgin Islands and the Windward and Leewards for many years and really know and love the Caribbean. This is the perfect charter for prospective cruisers who are looking forward to having their own boat, who want to learn to sail and learn the ins and outs of the sailing lifestyle. It is also an excellent choice for couples just looking to relax and be pampered while enjoying some great sailing.

The best, most awe-inspiring sailing vacation!
Wonderful experience! Beautiful waters, food, entertainment (most of it natural beauty) and company. Competent and learned Captain Gail knew the waters well, sailed excellently and took us to the prime snorkeling spots. I believe it has been the best, most awe-inspiring sailing vacation I may ever have had. Barry delighted us with his scrumptious food and fun personality. Thanks for the experience and for making it so memorable.
