3592brochure44-2wm4v4rp148r94albe92psMeet Steve and Deb

While teaching soccer at a Northern Wisconsin summer camp Steve was bit by the sailing bug. After graduation from a small university just north of Houston he moved to the mountains of Colorado where three years later he received his MBA from the University of Denver. He squeezed a little skiing in during that time, on average almost 100 days a year for three years.

Steve holds a 100 ton USCG Masters License. He has 20 years sailing experience – he spent 14 years racing in and around Galveston Bay, mostly on J24s but also on J22s, J105s and J109s. He has crossed the gulf of Mexico seven times and in 2011 alone put just over 10,000 sea miles under his keel while sailing solo from Texas to the Virgin Islands as well as completing a few deliveries. Prior to buying Alternate Latitude Steve owned a variety of boats including everything from a Sunfish to a Tayana 37.

He has owned several successful small businesses – he spent 12 years as a financial planner, then in 2003 he and one of his best friends started a medical equipment business. Seven years later he took off on an open ended cruise, however, missing his better half Deb, he decided it was time to figure out a way to get her to join him. The charter plan was hatched. Steve loves the outdoors and is looking forward to sharing his love of sailing and the water with you.

Deb was born & raised in Brownsville TX, and grew up on the beach with a strong love for water. At 25, she bought a one-way ticket to the USVI and found her calling in all things natural, especially food. After discovering eco-culture & a healthy, fresh diet at Maho Bay Camps, Deb worked for 15 years first with Whole Foods Market and then with the top natural products and brands in the world. She kept sneaking back to the Caribbean on vacations to sail (her other love) and crossed paths with Steve. A dream was born to encompass the love for all things natural while creating tropical adventures on the water. Deb brings 20 years of natural foods experience to the table, with a fresh & gourmet spin on a fun, festive vacation menu that you can feel good about. Organic produce, local baked goods & fresh, local fish when available.

What We Like

Deb and Steve bring a GREEN approach to catamaran sailing – winning the coveted “Going Green

to Save the Blue Award” at the 2014 yacht show. Their thorough attention to sustainable sailing is

evident even in the cleaning products they use. Deb sources organic, local foods for her cuisine,

too. We also like the creative design sense evident throughout the boat.

Alternate Latitude Named Most Eco-Friendly Sailing Yacht

[ST. THOMAS, VIRGIN ISLANDS] — Charter boat Alternate Latitude was recently
honored as the Most Eco-Friendly Sailing Yacht as part of the Charter Yacht Brokers
Association (CYBA) International’s Save the Blue Awards. Introduced in 2012, the
annual CYBA Save the Blue Awards recognize all charter yachts that take steps to
minimize their environmental impact and to ensure the future health of the oceans.

Owned and operated by Steve and Deb Schlosser, Alternate Latitude features all LED
lights, solar panels, a recycling collection system, and energy-efficient equipment. Only
cloth napkins and reusable laundry and grocery bags are used on the boat. Further, Steve
and Deb make all of their own cleaning products using white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide,
baking soda, and essential oils. “I am adamant about no chemicals,” said Deb. Guests
also enjoy fresh, organic fruits and vegetables that are local and sustainably grown when
available.

“It’s a challenge to source fresh and organic food from the Virgin Islands, but Steve and
Deb do it,” said Trish Conan, CYBA International President and founder of the Going
Green Committee. “A lot of yachts do green things, but with Alternate Latitude, it’s
ingrained in the culture. Whether it’s biodegradable sundries or homemade cleaning
products, the environment is always on their minds, but their approach to food makes
them really unique.”

In order to qualify for the 2013 award, yachts must have adopted a minimum of ten green
practices from a list of 30 criteria. Mandatory criteria include the reduction of plastic
bottle waste by producing pure, filtered water made by boat water-makers or by
purchasing water in large containers. Alternate Latitude was chosen out of 40 qualifying
yachts during the Virgin Island Charter-Yacht League (VICL) 39th Annual Fall Yacht
Show on November 4.

“We are thrilled that our small operation has been recognized with such an important award,” Deb added. “Some large companies are now producing very green, sustainable yachts, and we think that’s great. However, our boat was not built to be eco-friendly, but our practices make Alternate Latitude one of the greenest out there. We want to be an example that any crew can do the right thing.”

Best Way to Celebrate Wedding Anniversary and 40th Birthday

I’ll be honest and say that we were a little nervous before we got there as we have never chartered a boat before. My husband was worried about privacy and that he would get bored. I was nervous that I would get seasick and that I would miss being on land. However, after 10 minutes on board, we knew it was a great decision for us. We were never bored, and there was ALWAYS something to do! Privacy is not an issue and we never once felt confined! I did not plan the trip beforehand, rather trusted them to show us what the BVI’s had to offer- and they did not disappoint. Everyday was an unbelievable adventure including amazing snorkeling, a spa day at St. Peter’s, bar hopping and lobsters on the beach in Anegada, hiking on Virgin Gorda, and docking in completely secluded spots. Steve and Deb intuitively knew our needs as their guests and were extremely accommodating and gracious. Steve is a great Captain and knows the waters like the back of his hand. His sailing abilities are second to none. Deb is not only an amazing chef and bartender, but her passion for cooking and for life are contagious. Above all, they both love what they do…and it is evident! We enjoyed every moment and are already planning our next visit with Deb and Steve on Alternate Latitude! ~The Larsons

We Would Travel with Deb and Steve Again Anytime

Alternate Latitude was everything we hoped for and more! The accommodations were excellent. The hosts were fun, friendly, kind, and knowledgeable. Our young girls were welcomed and very well-cared for. The trip planning and suggestions were perfect! We specifically requested healthy meals and were amazed by the fresh ingredients and thoughtful preparation. The captain was capable, confident and clearly enjoys the sailing. Communication was excellent. Overall, we would travel with Deb and Steve again anytime.

It was an Unforgettable Experience

From our first step onto the boat, we knew we had made the right decision for our anniversary celebration. The Captain listened to our ideas about what we wanted to do and customized our trip to our personal desires. Every day our expectations were exceeded as far as the delicious, healthy meals, the wonderful sites and less traveled locations, even sailing 101 lessons for those of us who wished to learn. It was, without a doubt, the best vacation we have ever had. Our rooms were comfortable and private. The beds are surprisingly comfortable and roomy. The meals were amazing. We did some hard sailing (our wish) and never felt any seasickness or doubt in the capable hands of our Captain. We even decided to renew our vows on the boat and they kindly accommodated that. It was an unforgettable experience. We can’t recommend it highly enough!

This Was our Most Wonderful Vacation Ever

We were warmly greeted at the dock by Captain Steve and he escorted us to his catamaran. He even helped to carry our bags. Upon stepping onboard we found some cool drinks waiting for us along with his first mate, Deb. She made us feel very at ease and at home immediately. There were four of us and we chose the all inclusive. We simply could not have been more pleased with everything from the exceptional food that Deb prepared to the master sailing skills of Captain Steve. They are very attentive to their guests’ needs without being intrusive in anyway. Captain Steve and Deb each possess sincere and well intentioned personalities that are compatible with life in a shared living space. The most fabulous part of what they offer is the ability and willingness to customize your experience. It was very clear that they were eager to provide us with whatever type of experience we were looking for. We opted for some sailing opportunities for my husband along with some peaceful beach-combing for others. Captain Steve’s knowledge of the islands and when to arrive at each point allowed us to discover the most beautiful sandy coves, that we sometimes had all to ourselves. Snorkeling with the most brilliantly colored fish/ as well as swimming with the turtles was enjoyed. We took a hike up a mountain path with stunning panoramic views of the beautiful azure sea. If you are looking for more excitement such as some nightlife at the local clubs/shopping then they will make sure that happens too. The Catamaran itself was spotless and perfectly maintained. As a double hull vessel, we felt that we were more stable and comfortable than we would have on a mono-hull. We all slept peacefully each night in our comfortable bunks with hot coffee waiting to greet us each morning. This was our most wonderful vacation ever. Captain Steve and Deb’s efforts were perfectly orchestrated and everything flowed seamlessly. Their professionalism combined with their warm and lovely personalities are sure to provide you with the getaway that you have always dreamed of.

Truly an Exceptional Experience for Everyone

Jennifer and I have enjoyed going to the BVI several times over the last ten years. This particular charter hosted by Captain Steve and his wife Deb ranks at the very top. We felt ‘welcomed’ to their home as soon as we arrived. I can’t describe it better than to say we all connected immediately. The ‘fun meter’ was set high from the first day on. Alternate Latitude, the vessel, was first class all the way. We felt like we WERE on a floating ‘bed and breakfast’! The good vibe sustained itself throughout the entire 9 days, which I know to be rare. As Korrel said, we felt like we were sailing with our friends Steve and Deb. I cannot speak for Steve and Deb, but I came away believing that It was truly an exceptional experience for everyone on the vessel. Sailing on Alternate Latitude will improve anyone’s attitude! If you want to have the BVI experience laid at your feet, you couldn’t do any better than having Captain Steve and Deb show you their world.

Our Teenage Kids LOVED it

What a spectacular week! We were a little concerned about spending a week on a boat with two strangers, but Captain Steve & First mate Deb seemed like family half way through the week! They are two of the most thoughtful, interesting, & gracious people I’ve ever met. The boat was comfortable, the locations we visited were beautiful, & the food (aaah, the food!) was amazing and healthy! It is rare to encounter people so focused on making sure other people are happy. Steve & Deb know the islands well & did a great job creating an interesting itinerary for us that kept the entire family happy, which was great, because we arrived stressed from the holidays & without a lot of “must sees”. We saw tons of spectacular places; many times with few other people around, so we felt like we had paradise to ourselves. Our teenage kids LOVED it so much & were sad to leave! We all learned a little about sailing–Steve was great at explaining what was going on with the boat. Both he & Deb endured our endless questions with grace & answered thoughtfully. We spent Christmas on the boat, and again, Deb & Steve went out of their way to make sure it was a special time for our family. I truly cannot do justice to the excellence of our week aboard the Alternate Latitude–just BOOK IT!!! You will not be disappointed!

Best trip We Have Ever Taken- Hands Down!

We stayed on Alternate Latitude with a couple of our best friends and had a blast! Steve is a great captain, he kept our days filled with snorkeling, sight seeing, island hopping, and pretty much anything and everything we wanted to do he made it happen. Deb is such a wonderful chef and host. We had great drinks and food the entire trip, even down to the midnight snacks 🙂 I recommend this boat to anyone that wants to have an amazing vacation. Best trip we have ever taken- hands down!
Arnolds November 2013

Captain Steve was excellent in catering to creating ‘our trip’, we were not rushed, we were offered many, many options for what we would like to experience and allowed the freedom to change our minds as we got more on ‘island time.’ Swimming with sea turtles, fine dining in remote spots, grilling lobster on the boat. We just left and are figuring out when we are going back. Excellent stress relief for my over worked husband ( plus wifi so he could still be in contact when he needed) I was surprised by how well we slept in our cabin. (We were concerned, used to a king size bed and temp set on 72 at home. ) We were not hot nor cramped. All in All -INCREDIBLE vacation And WONDERFUL CAPTAIN!

Great charter! Captain Steve really took care of us. Boat is in excellent shape and well suited for adventure. Setup is perfect for 3 couples, each stateroom has its own (head/toilet/watercloset), so plenty of privacy. Forget the cruise ships, this is the way to see the BVIs!

This Was the Best Vacation We Ever Had!

I don’t usually do reviews, but have to make an exception for this. This was the best vacation we ever had! We’ve done bareboating in the BVI numerous times. This was our first time with a captain. Steve was a very gracious host and an extremely knowledgeable captain. Our group consisted of four very experienced sailors and two who had never sailed before. All of us had a GREAT time! From the moment we were picked up in St. Thomas, to spending a day in St. John, thru checking in at Jost Van Dyke, and cruising thru the BVI-including Anegada, everything was stress and worry free. Steve arranged everything according to our schedule and wants. He showed us some anchorages and snorkeling spots we’d never have known about on a bareboat charter. We preferred to eat ashore most evenings, and Steve introduced us to some fantastic little out of the way eateries that we hadn’t been to before. I would highly recommend an Alternate Latitude charter for both first-time and experienced sailors. We had both and would all do it again.

The Food Was Awesome!

The trip was absolutely wonderful. Steve and Deb are the best. The food was awesome plus we chose what we wanted to eat in advance. Everything was ready for us when we got to the boat – drinks, food… The beds were comfortable and designed to get the most out of a small space. Lots of storage plus each room has it’s own bathroom/shower. We stopped at some of the best snorkeling and dive spots. There were a couple really good popular bars we visited – great music and dancing. The people were all very nice and friendly.
~Rainee June 2013

Each Day Was a New Adventure

Hubby & I went with 2 other couples. It was hubby’s 50th bday. Steve & Deb made sure we were very well taken care of. From taking us to the best places to finding lobster for the bday boy’s dinner (which Deb cooked superbly). Steve & Deb both know these islands very well. They know the out of the way places to find local artists along with knowing the colorful locals with great stories! The trip truly was amazing. The scenery was fantastic, food was superb, company was delightful. Each day was a new adventure. We got the well known places along with the lesser known gems. (harvesting our own salt on SALT ISLAND (with owners permission of course!) They really took care with the provisioning of the boat, making sure we had exactly what we asked for – at the best prices available for each item, even if it took numerous trips. We ended up using exactly all of our items. That takes talent to provision 8 ppl for 8 days to the tee!
~The Taylors June 2013

Steve was a Great Guide!

Steve did an amazing job of captaining our group around the BVI. We were a bit difficult only due to the fact that we had zero agenda, other than to just relax, swim, snorkel, sleep, and play. The ship is a great space for small groups and has a really cozy feel to it that is welcoming as you spend the week in your new water “home”. Steve was wonderful at showing us the out of the way, non-touristy places as well as helping us to hit up THE hot spots every traveler to the BVI should experience. Overall this was one of my best vacations and certainly in my top 5 list of all time greats. I would recommend Alternate Latitude to anyone who wants to “tool around” the BVI and just have a great cruise, atypical of the HUGE ships. It’s sort of living like a local and Steve was a great guide! ~Iglesias July 2013

Deb Was an Exceptional Cook and Hostess

My family had a wonderful time. We did the half board option and it was perfect. Deb was an exceptional cook and hostess. Food was great and always hit the spot. [Even the kids were happy!] Cold beer aplenty and a cocktail when needed. Steve the captain will meet you at the taxi stand when you get dropped off and will take care of you throughout the whole trip. We went to all the usual places, and some off the beaten track, which was especially fun when snorkeling. Sharks, turtles, stingrays, barracudas saw them all! Especially recommend the 5pm Tarpon feeding at Sabor Rock. It was my first time on a Catamaran. I was not sure what to expect when under sail, but the boat was awesome. You can do as much or as little as you want, again I went for the half helping option, occasionally helping out and then returning to my cold beer and lunch located exactly where I left it- on the table- not going to happen on a mono-hull! Five Star. Thanks Steve, Deb from “Seal Team Tango” ~Thomas Family July 2013

I Would Highly Recommend This Boat

This is my second trip on a yacht charter in the BVI. We’ve had a great experience both times. It’s such a relaxing way to vacation. Our first trip, we did a “captain only” charter, so this half-board experience was such a pleasant upgrade. We did have some unpleasant weather several times throughout the trip, but we still managed to have a great time. Captain Steve is such responsible captain and we all felt safe with him the whole time. He enjoys sailing and he gave us lots of sail time – one advantage of the windy weather! But the best part of this boat is Deb. She is an amazing hostess! She’s kind and gentle and fun and wants to ensure that her guests are happy always. She spoiled us by waiting on us constantly. She values healthy meals and I was a little skeptical about what she would feed us but she somehow managed to make meals that were both gourmet and healthy and filling! Deb did “allow” the Captain to make us his decidedly unhealthy special rum cake and I’m pretty sure we ate everything including the crumbs! Great experience and if you are looking for a charter, I would highly recommend this boat.
